Conference « Crime Series »
Crime every screen
For the premiere of Season 2 of Braquo and given the high number of crime series in competition, we would like to explore how this genre has persisted in popular culture.
The detective genre, which appeared in England with Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and in France with Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin in the 19th century, immediately found an audience, initially among the working class but later attracting both intellectuals and scholars alike. The phenomenon grew in the 20th century with authors such as Agatha Christie and Georges Simenon. Even now, detective novels are bestsellers in bookshops and crime literature has held an undisputed place in culture for around twenty years now.
In movies, the film noir left an undeniable imprint on the golden age of Hollywood (between the 30s and 50s) with masterpieces such as Scarface, The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. In the 70s and 80s, Martin Scorsese, Brian de Palma and Francis Ford Coppola revived the crime genre with key films including Taxi Driver, The Godfather and Goodfellas.
In television, cops and private detectives abound. Often inspired by crime literature classics, these heroes have recently assumed a more cinematographic dimension through more ambitious fiction productions such as The Sopranos by David Chaso on HBO.
In this context, Francois Guérif, founder of the Rivages/Noir collection at the Payot publishing house and a keen film enthusiast, will explore the close links between the crime genre in literature and film.
Abdel Raouf Dafri, creator of the mini-series La Commune, head writer for the second season of Braquo and writer of the screenplays for Mesrine and A Prophet, will discuss the ties between film and TV series.
Pierre Sérisier, former head of a detective novel collection, author and translator of detective novels, and writer of TV series blog Le Monde des Séries, will look at the literary influences on crime series..
